Before becoming Wat Matchimawat; Wat Matchimawat was an abandoned temple before named Wat Non Mak Khaeng. There are 2 evidences showing that it was an abandoned temple; which is laterite chedi located on the mound. The people have been told that the chedi covered or straddled a large Mak Khaeng stump, and there is a white stone Buddha image in the attitude of subduing Naga (currently, it is Luang Pu Nak) inside the chedi.
At present, the white stone Buddha image in the posture of subduing Naga is enshrined in front of the Ubosot for the people of Udon Thani and nearby provinces to worship together until today. It became a Buddha image that was known for its sanctity with Wat Matchimawat all along
